The Challenge

Food insecurity is a pressing issue on the East End of Long Island, where the high cost of living masks the struggles of many local families and seniors.

While the region is known for its affluence, thousands of residents quietly face barriers to accessing fresh produce, especially those relying on food pantries, living in affordable housing, or seeking support at shelters and senior centers. For too many, pantry shelves are stocked only with nonperishable items, leaving little access to the fresh vegetables and herbs that are essential for a balanced diet and good health.

Share the Harvest Farm plays a vital role in addressing this inequity. As the only farm on the South Fork dedicated primarily to fighting food insecurity, they donate tens of thousands of pounds of organically grown, nutrient-rich produce each year to local organizations such as South Fork food pantries, affordable housing complexes, The Retreat women's shelter, the East Hampton Town Senior Citizens Nutrition Center, and Hamptons Community Outreach (a Carte Blanche organization).

Without Share the Harvest Farm’s generous donations, these organizations would largely depend on shelf-stable foods, meaning their clients would miss out on the fresh ingredients that support better nutrition and quality of life.

By providing high-quality fresh vegetables and herbs, grown using organic methods, and delivered even in the early spring and late fall, Share the Harvest Farm ensures that the most vulnerable members of the community have access to food that nurtures both body and spirit. Their work not only nourishes local families and individuals, but also raises awareness, strengthens the local food system, and offers hope for a healthier, more equitable East End.

THE FARM

Share the Harvest Farm started on a half acre in 2010, and now farms six acres at EECO Farm in East Hampton. They were founded on the belief that everyone should have access to fresh, nutritious food. To that end, they grow and donate thousands of pounds of fresh, highly nutritious vegetables and herbs to local organizations feeding hundreds of children, seniors, and families in their community.

QUALITY PRODUCE FOR FOOD PANTRIES

Share the Harvest Farm focuses on nutrient-rich vegetables and cold-tolerant staple crops that provide much-needed produce in early spring and late fall, when many families in the community are struggling to make ends meet. Fundamentally, they approach outreach from the standpoint of giving not what is left over or inferior in quality, but that which they would want to put on their own tables.

“Share the Harvest Farm not only provides fresh organic vegetables for us weekly, but they care about food education and work with us in learning about how to use the vegetables we receive.”

Ella Engel-Snow & Gerry Mooney, Whalebone Village Apartments

“The Retreat staff and clients are so grateful for the generosity of Share the Harvest Farm in supplying fresh produce for our residents and their children each week. Community support like theirs enables us to continue providing safety, shelter and support for victims of domestic abuse.”
