The Challenge

When individuals encounter challenges such as declining health, limited mobility, or lack of resources, the simple tasks of caring for a pet become overwhelming or even impossible.

This situation creates a heartbreaking dilemma: people who love their animals deeply may be forced to consider surrendering them to shelters simply because they can no longer manage their care. The loss of a pet in these circumstances can have devastating effects, stripping individuals of vital companionship and support, and often leading to increased isolation, depression, and a decline in overall health.

Many New Yorkers, particularly older adults, people living with illness or disability, and those facing financial hardship, rely on the companionship of their pets for emotional, physical, and social well-being.

For many, the human-animal bond is not just a source of joy, but a lifeline.

At the same time, the pets themselves are at risk. When owners can’t provide adequate care, animals may suffer neglect or end up in already overburdened shelters, facing uncertain futures.

HOUSE CALLS

The Housecall Program is PAWS NY’s core initiative. Trained volunteers make on-site home visits to older adults or individuals living with illness or disability. These visits provide essential pet care services, including dog walking, litter maintenance, administering medication, and ensuring pets have food and water. By offering this hands-on support, the program enables vulnerable New Yorkers to keep their beloved pets at home despite physical or financial challenges. This holistic, wrap-around care helps preserve the crucial human-animal bond for those most in need.
